Supporting Our Seniors: Addressing the Unique Needs of Older Adults in Rural Oregon

NW Oregon has a growing population of older adults. With a higher percentage of residents aged 65 and older than the state average, these counties are home to many seniors who face unique challenges. Among these, living alone presents significant risks, including social isolation, difficulties in accessing essential services, and the struggle to maintain independence. CAT recognizes these challenges and is dedicated to providing the support that our seniors need to thrive.

CAT’s senior programs are designed to address the specific needs of older adults in these rural areas. Our Senior Nutrition and Meals on Wheels programs ensure that homebound seniors receive nutritious meals, which is particularly important for those living alone. In addition to providing food, these programs offer much-needed social interaction and regular wellness checks. For seniors who require more hands-on care, our respite services offer relief to family caregivers, allowing them to take a break while ensuring their loved ones receive quality care.

The impact of these programs goes beyond the individual; they strengthen the fabric of our community. By helping seniors remain in their homes and maintain their independence, we reduce the strain on local healthcare facilities and foster a more resilient community. Moreover, our programs are vital in preventing the physical and mental health declines that often accompany aging in isolation. By providing comprehensive support, CAT is helping seniors not just to survive but to live with dignity and connection.

As our population continues to age, the demand for these services will only grow. CAT is committed to expanding our senior programs and advocating for policies that address the needs of older adults in our community. We believe that every senior deserves to age with dignity, and through our ongoing efforts, we aim to ensure that the seniors in Clatsop, Columbia, and Tillamook counties receive the care and support they need.
